Unknown etiology conditions

Conditions with unknown etiology, or idiopathic diseases, are diseases with an unknown cause or mechanism. Some examples of conditions with unknown etiology include:

  • Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME)/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS)
    A complex illness that affects many people and can cause fatigue, musculoskeletal pain, sleep disturbances, headaches, and impaired concentration and short-term memory
  • Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS)
    A condition with unknown etiology
  • Villitis of unknown etiology (VUE)
    A placental condition that can occur when a mother's immune system loses its tolerance for her genetically unique fetus
  • Chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology (CKDu)
    A global public health problem that may be caused by heat stress, agrochemicals, contaminated drinking water, or heavy metals
